Abstract
The running together of seemingly unconnected OT texts within the Gospel of Mark has long been cause for comment. The Gospel begins with such a compilation (Mk 1:2-3, conflating Mal 3:1, Ex 23:20 and Isa 40:3), and they recur throughout Mark's narrative in words attributed to God (Mk 1:11) and Jesus (Mk 11:17; 13:24-27; 14:62). There are some parallels to this apparently cavalier arrangement of texts in the Qumran literature, but the technique seems to have met with only partial approval from the other synoptic authors.
