Abstract
Jean-Luc Marion's broad phenomenological project is predicated upon a critique of the traces of a constituting subject that are retained by Husserl and Heidegger. While Marion's phenomenology of givenness eliminates these traces, it does so by reducing the subject to a passive recipient on whom phenomena impose themselves. Claude Romano, on the other hand, responds to the same concerns without limiting the subject to pure receptivity. This paper compares both Marion and Romano and, in so doing, draws attention to some of the limitation's of Marion's account, and highlights the importance of hermeneutics in phenomenology.
